Christina Kerns

Christina Kerns dreamlike vignettes with a Technicolour palette portray scenarios which seem more imaginary than real.    These little dioramas with jagged edges purposefully mimic our jagged memories while also recounting images of American mass media.     They examine the stereotypes that permeate society: sexism, commercialism, prejeuduce and the tragic nature of cliche's.     The unrefined, childlike and suprising methods of her construction simultaneously poke fun at and pass judgement on the follies and foibles of our contemporary world.   At the same time they look back at the history of art with the surreal and nostalgic sculptures of Joseph Cornel, the Dada collages of Hannah Höch and the postmodern photographs of Laurie Simmons.
This is Kerns' first exhibition in the UK.
